Itinerary
Day 1 : 160 kms
Johannesburg to Pilanesberg
Monday 24th October 2022
You’ll be picked up for your guided transfer to Bakubung Bush Lodge – a drive which normally takes between 2 and 2½ hours – depending on traffic, from 246 Johannes St, Fairland, at 10h30.
We head out of Johannesburg in a north-westerly direction.
Not long after leaving the confines of municipal suburbia, we drive through the hills in Broederstroom that have become a popular weekend getaway for city bound escapees from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
We pass close to the UNESCO World Heritage site known as ‘The Cradle of Humankind’ – a self-proclaimed name, chosen because 40% of all hominid (early man) bones ever discovered, were found in a number of dolomitic caves here.
This area, along with East Africa, has the longest recorded history of man, dating back more than 2 million years to the earliest hominin species.
“Mrs Ples”, excavated with dynamite and a pickaxe in 1947, was the first in a long line of discoveries made in the Sterkfontein Caves.
We drop in altitude as the road takes us from the Central Grassland Plateau Biome, where Johannesburg is situated, into the sub-Saharan Savanna Biome.
This is a nutritionally rich Biome, stretching west and east – and north into Africa, where most of the major game parks are found.
We pass a number of tourist attractions including the Lion and Safari Park and Lesedi Cultural Village.
We have a planned stop and a leg stretch, in the vicinity of the century old Hartbeespoort Dam – originally built for irrigation.
After crossing the waters of the dam, which is sadly regarded as being one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world, we cross the 2 billion year old Magaliesberg Mountain range – another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From here the landscape opens out onto a featureless plain, and we drive through rural Africa on the edge of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, known to contain the world’s richest ore deposits and the world’s largest reserves of platinum-group metals.
We pass through a number of African villages, which owe their existence to the platinum mines in the area.
We enter the Pilanesberg National Park at Bakubung Gate and shortly after that end our drive at Bukubung Bush Lodge, where you’ll spend the night.
